I want to  welcome you to the Joint Office for Science Support web site.  The mission of JOSS is to provide exceptional staff and infrastructure support in order to facilitate activities in the atmospheric and related sciences community.  Please accept my invitation to explore our web site and learn what JOSS is doing and what benefit JOSS could be to you and your work.

In 1973, I started working at the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) and have held various positions over the years.  In 2003, I became the Associate Director for UCAR’s Joint Office for Science Support (JOSS).   At that time, JOSS consisted of two groups:  the Field Operations and Data Management (FODM) group and the Program Support Operations (PSO) group.  As JOSS Associate Director, I was responsible for the activities of the PSO.  PSO facilitated and supported national and international global climate change research projects; fostered international cooperation; provided off-site office administration in support of community projects; and provided logistic planning advice and non-scientific support for field projects.

In 2005, JOSS transitioned with the FODM staff moving to NCAR’s Earth Observing Laboratory in NCAR.  PSO/JOSS remained in UCAR and because the name JOSS was widely known in the community, the name remained JOSS.   I became the Director and am responsible for the overall JOSS mission, strategy, and support activities.

The “new” JOSS has continued to expand its role in providing logistic and administrative support to the national and international scientific community.

I believe that JOSS maintains a core staff possessing a unique and broad set of skills, and I am committed to expanding JOSS into future partnerships with the atmospheric science community.  On behalf of the JOSS staff, I want to convey our appreciation for the opportunity to stretch the boundaries of what we can all accomplish together.

Please contact me directly if I can be of any help to you.
