Workshop Format and Working Group Descriptions

The Workshop will span three days.  It will include both keynote presentations and scientific working group sessions to exchange information and define new joint initiatives to advance the goals of each country relative to climate-change science and applications. The presentations in the working group sessions will be relatively brief and designed to promote discussion. The workshop is also intended to promote more effective use of observational systems and the modeling capabilities of both countries to address climate change issues. Working group sessions will address the following four specific topical areas:

  • Long-term Projection:  This session will address issues relating to climate change on century time scales.

  • Near-term prediction:  This session will deal with prediction of climate trends on decadal time scales, with some emphasis on the prediction of regional changes.

  • Extreme events projection: This session will explore possible changes in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events such as tropical cyclones, heat waves, and floods.

  • Observation and monitoring: This session will address new observational methods, including space-based methods, for monitoring, detection, and attribution of climate change.
