What is the discussion to which you refer in your comments? I'm especially intrigued by the quote attributed to some dumb Swede with a name similar to mine.
My criticisms of acoustic tomography are that:
1) the cost of moored tomography arrays has prevented them from achieving the geometric increase in resolution that more than modest numbers of elements would achieve.
2) it is insensitive to salinity.
By the way, it appears to me that moorings of any kind are difficult for NSF to continue to support, not just tomographic ones.
