07:00-09:00 -- Steering Committee meeting

The purpose of the small group discussions is to first and foremost identify current and emerging scientific questions within the broadly-defined field of physical oceanography. Secondarily, the groups will address the questions posed to and answered by the community, namely:

  1. What are the unique and successful aspects of NSF core research?

  2. Are the interactions among the elements of PO (analytic, experimental, numerical and observational) adequate?

  3. Should interactions with atmospheric sciences, biology, chemistry and geology be a driving force on core PO? If so how?

  4. How do advances in PO benefit other parts of ocean sciences?

  5. What pressing societal problems can PO contribute to?

  6. What infrastructure (e.g., ships, instrumentation, computer, people) will be required to answer these questions?

Groups will be assigned one or more of these questions for the purpose of 1) focusing the discussion and 2) providing input into the written summary of the workshop. Despite the focus on one or more of the above questions, it is expected that in the context of a group's discussion, most or all of the above questions will be discussed.

It is intended that the small groups will keep their original constituency throughout the workshop. The same group will meet several times over the course of the three days, working toward the goals spelled out in the initial meeting. The plenary session talks, responses and their attendant discussions are to be used as input for the small group discussions.
