This is in response to your request for input into NSF's Biological Oceanography Program. I would like the NSF program to provide substantial funding for marine conservaton research - specifically research focused on questions of conserving marine species and ecosystems. Marine conservation problems will continue to grow as the world's population expands. Generating sound scientific understanding on protecting, restoring and sustainably using marine biodiversity is the greatest challenge to biological oceanography and related disciplines in the coming decades.
